Introducing Our Work – December 2015

I love talking about the work of the Akoben Foundation – if you are reading this you already know that our work is all about ending poverty through literacy.  However, there are two questions that nearly everyone asks:

1.  Are the statistics we flash on our website home screen really true?  Sadly, they are.  Read the sourced statistics for yourself at https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-literacy-america.

2.  What does “Akoben” mean?  It is a west African word representing a war horn, sounded to call villagers to action against a threat (http://www.adinkra.org/htmls/adinkra/akob.htm).  We chose this word because we believe the war against childhood illiteracy deserves our best effort, and that it will be solved only when an entire community gets involved.

Happy Holidays!
